Rafael & Jasmyn

Two young hearts in their third year of marriage. "Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. ... Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ." Ephesians 5:1-2, 21

An October Update

HAPPY SPRING! Oct. 29th, 2006

The way the weather is, Jasmyn would think that Easter was around the corner. It is beautiful here. Rafa’s mom’s garden is at its height of beauty and the trees everywhere are filling in with new green leaves.

Life has a good light beat as well. We have some future plans to look forward to which make the upcoming summer so exciting.

In January, Universidad Andrés Bello will be taking a team of students to provide dental services to people that live on the small islands in southern Chiloé. Rafa will be pulling teeth and working on cavities while Jasmyn helps maintain the kitchen for the week they are there.

In February, Jasmyn’s family from California will be coming out to visit for a couple weeks. We are excited to have Mom, Wayne, Hannah (12) and J.D. (10) stay in our apartment and get to know Chile a bit.

In March, Rafa and Jasmyn will get a chance to head back to the U.S. since Jasmyn’s Dad and Angela will be getting married in Miami, Florida. We will be able to attend thanks to her Dad providing for the means to go! While we are in Florida, we are going to take time to visit the family of Jasmyn’s aunt Jennie in Orlando. Yet, it looks like we may end of also getting some time with Grandma & Grandpa as well as Jasmyn’s cousin Josh who will be in town.

Rafa just celebrated his 23rd birthday on the 18th. We went to a nice restaurant with Rafa’s parents called Casa Bosque where we ended up getting 3 desserts in the end by mistake.. he he. Jasmyn thought about planning a surprise birthday party, but he calm and enjoyable family party was the best in the end.

Rafa is finishing up his 4th year of dental school (3 more to go) so final exams will soon be around the corner. These can be brutal sometimes because they test cumulatively the last year’s material. Please pray for him. He is doing very well in his clinical classes. He enjoys being able to help people he knows get dental work done at a cheaper price. We are hoping that he can roll in a lot more points in “clínica” before the semester is over so that he can have a nice high percentage.

Rafa can’t wait to have a job and provide for the family, but he sure makes the most effort he can as a full-time student. He often buys items to re-sell and now he is considering selling Herbal Life on the side. We will see.

Jasmyn is no longer working for her father-in-law because the schedule never really worked itself out and we thought it best to not get so dependent on Rafa’s family for finances. So, Jasmyn is not going to be registering for classes in March. However, Jasmyn continues to work in Alief as an English teacher. Right now her schedule is a bit hectic, but she loves the busyness when it comes down to it. She is in the bus or the subway all day traveling to different municipalities of Santiago to teach in various businesses.

The increased classes are also helping with our monthly income. The institute dumped a whole new set of classes just when we were getting really concerned about not having classes/income/work. What an answer to prayer. It is really amazing how faithful is our Father in heaven. We still are pretty tight on income paying much more than half on our mortgage payment, but everything always works out. Rafa mentioned that it seems like we are missionaries :) because of the miracles He works each month, but I guess we just need to find our ministry in the church! Ha. Maybe it is the classes themselves.

The cookie business is doing well. Soon, we will need to begin adding new items to the 4 cookies we always sell. Maybe, something special for the upcoming Christmas holidays. By the way, in Chile, since they don’t have a Thanksgiving to wait for and Halloween isn’t a big deal, all the stores are already dressed for Christmas and playing Christmas music in the background! Jasmyn is incredulous.

Rafa and Jasmyn have been going running sometimes in the mornings. Originally, they wanted to be a part of a 10k Nike Run, but registration was full. Now they are training for whatever next event might come. It is great to go together and pace each other.

SOME RECENT EVENTS:

Our church, Iglesia Luz al Mundo, is right now hosting for a week a missionary family that works in Mexico City. Yesterday and today they have planned a marriage conference and it is soooo good. Nelson Morales is quite the story-teller as well. He arms you with the many experiences of others, successes and failures, to bring the right perspective and light to the themes. His use of the entire Bible in his points made us really excited about God’s word. It was fun yesterday to spend time with the other families of the church and visitors that came. The conference is free, but it was really well organized. Everyone is chipping in. Jasmyn even made apple-pear and pumpkin bread to provide for the “once” (tea time…many Chileans don’t have dinner, but they have “once”).

On Friday night we decided to catch something outside to eat. Rafa had been wanting to try a Mexican restaurant close to the house called T’quila. So we ordered the cheapest meals on the menu and shared margaritas. The restaurant had live music for a while and then the turned on salsa music and the whole restaurant got up to dance. We didn’t expect to go out dancing, but it ended up being very fun.

Last night we came back to the apartment complex and there was water everywhere! It was incredible. We found out that the water heater (we have main ones that fuel the various floors of our 15 floor complex) on the 9th floor exploded which caused so much pressure that the one on the 1st floor exploded too. Wow. Many people’s apartments became flooded. A neighbor friend from downstairs had her entire bedroom carpet drenched! Surprisingly, being on the 2nd floor, we had no flooding. Boy, were we thankful. Now everyone is just hoping that we have the hot water back again today.

Thank you for all the support of friends and family! We are grateful for your prayers, e-mails and the snail mails especially. Jasmyn will have to keep her radar screen up still for another job since in the summer, the English classes fairly diminish. Please keep us in mind.

Joy and blessing to you all!

Rafa and Jasmyn
