Rafael & Jasmyn

Two young hearts in their third year of marriage. "Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. ... Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ." Ephesians 5:1-2, 21

Winter Wonderland

Snowy mountains. So beautiful there are right now. I am always amazed.

Today we ate chicken soup with little noodles of alphabet letters and we had a contest on who could make their name first. It is fair because we both have six letters in our name. J Nevertheless, Rafa won. Jasmyn had a hard time finding the “y”. Poor Rafa is very sick right now so we are eating light and he is taking Pepto Bismo that I brought from the states. You see, he just had a wild trip by bus recently with his dad.

They left for Mendoza, Argentina early in the morning this last Sunday to buy goods for Rafael’s business. Rafa was thinking of being a vendor to him, but they went together first to see the price and where they would be buying it. Rafa wasn’t worried about missing Monday classes because they university students decided to not go to class, it was the huge “paro” since the students are making protests to the Ministry of Education right now about student transportation fares, quality of education, and prices of pre-university tests. Anyways…Rafa expected to return Monday night, but right after they left on Sunday it began to rain in Santiago. Meaning lots of snow for the Andes. They were stuck in Argentina and ended up taking a bus down south to Bariloche, Argentina, then across to Osorno, Chile and then 12 hours northbound to Santiago. Ooffta. They did not get back into town until Thursday morning. Jasmyn was feeling quite lonely, but Jesus became her best companion yet. J It was the first time we had been apart since getting married.

So on the long bus rides and through the cold and lack of sleep, Rafa now is sick with a cold and an upset tummy. I hope that he feels better soon. Moreover, hopefully he can catch up with all the time he missed in the university.

Jasmyn loves teaching English. And everyone seems to love the cookies we sell. Are business is called “Postres Americanos” or American Desserts. We are hoping to branch into doing cakes too, but will have to see the costs. We really do not make any extra trips to sell the cookies, but we bring them in Tupperware containers to work and school and the people in the apartment complex and at church are buying too. It is fun.

The pay for English lessons and cookies though is not going to add up. Jasmyn is hoping to hear back from Stanford University in July about a job as study abroad program coordinator. We will see if she stands out against the many other interviews and resumes.

Tonight we are inviting to our house Delight, an old Westmont bud of Jasmyn’s. She is in town for English teacher training and then heads down south (like Antarctica south) to Punta Arenas, where she will be posted. It will be great to see her.

Hope you in the states are enjoying the summer weather! Until next time.
The Guarins.
